Circuit Description

The SAE J1939 data link circuit consists of one positive and one negative wire. Two 120 Ω resistors are connected in parallel to terminate the ends of the backbone. Stubs connect the engine control modules (ECM) to the J1939 backbone.

The engine control modules use the J1939 data link 2 for communication between modules.

Component Location

The Engine Control Modules (ECMs) are mounted on both banks of the engine.

Conditions for Running the Diagnostics

This diagnostic runs continuously when the keyswitch is in the ON position.

Conditions for Setting the Fault Codes

The primary engine control module (ECM 1) lost communication with one or more secondary ECMs via the J1939 data link 2.

Action Taken When the Fault Code is Active

The ECM illuminates the red STOP ENGINE lamp immediately after the diagnostic runs and fails.

Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code

To validate the repair, perform a key cycle, start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute.

The fault code status displayed by the recommended electronic service tool or equivalent will change to INACTIVE immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.

The ECM will turn off the red STOP ENGINE lamp immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.

The “Reset All Faults” command in the recommended electronic service tool or equivalent can be used to clear active and inactive faults.

Possible causes of this fault code include:

A secondary ECM is not receiving power from the battery supply circuit in the harness. This can be caused by an open circuit in the power supply wire, blown ECM fuse, or open return wire.

Tripped circuit breaker in the OEM power supply circuit.

An open or short circuit in the SAE J1939 datalink circuit

Intermittent communication between the ECMs.
