Perkins Phaser/1000 Series Engine New Water Pumps Changed

The water pumps used on all Phaser/1000 Series engines have been changed. The changes to the

components of the pumps are listed below:

Water pump for 6 cylinder engines

 

Water pump for 4 cylinder engines (AE engines)

Note: Some of the procedure to dismantle and to assemble the new pumps has changed.

The tool (A on page 3), shown in operation 21A-03 of the Workshop Manual, must be used to fit the water seal as the tool sets the seal to the correct length. In the earlier pumps the impeller set the length of the water seal.

 

The dimensions for the tool have not changed.

The dimension from the front face to the rear face of the pump has been reduced by the removal of 1,0 mm (0.04 in) of material from the front face. This affects the dimension ‘A’, in (B) on page 3, from the front face of the pump to the front face of the impeller.

 

This dimension is important as it ensures the correct clearance between the blades of the impeller and the pump body. The changes to this dimension are listed below:

Engine types AA, AB, AC, AD, AE

Earlier pump (part number 4131E007) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8,1/8,5 mm (0.31/0.33 in)

Latest pump (part numbers 4131E012 and 4131E008). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7,1/7,5 mm (0.28/0.30 in)

Engine types YA, YB, YD and YE

Earlier pump (part number 4131E105) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 7,7/8,0 mm (0.30/0.31 in)

Latest pump (part number 4131E011). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6,7/7,0 mm (0.26/0.28 in)

The sealant used on the setscrews to retain the cover has been changed to allow the setscrews to be used again without the need to apply new sealant.

These changes were introduced from engine number A******U594297W for 4 cylinder engines and Y******U542894W for 6 cylinder engines. The old and the new components are not interchangeable.

 

Engine type AE

The procedure to dismantle and to assemble this water pump has changed. The procedure for the engines fitted with the latest water pump, part number 4131E008, is now the same as for the 6 cylinder engines (Y series).

This procedure (operation 21A-03A) can be found in the Detroit Diesel Phaser Workshop Manual. This change was also from engine number A******U594297W.

Note: The dimension ‘A’ (B) to set accurately the impeller will be 7,1/7,5 mm (0.28/0.30 in) for the latest water pump.
